Beaumont Hospital Troy Main CampusThe recent increase in workplace violence for healthcare facilities has led many hospitals to evaluate how their policies and procedures match up to the incidents that they are experiencing. Many have found that their policies are outdated and available resources are inadequate to provide the safest and securest work environment for employees. By identifying some of the main causes for violent incidents in hospitals, we can determine ways that might help alleviate some of the violence that healthcare facilities are experiencing.

Some causes of violent incidents in hospitals and outpatient care facilities include: intoxicated patients, increased wait times in emergency departments, early release of patients that end up back in ED, and an increase in use by law enforcement for prisoners. This is not a comprehensive list, but it does help give us an idea of what kinds of scenarios might trigger violence for an individual.

Up until 9/11/2001, many commercial and industrial facilities were only minimally secured from outside threats or crisis situations. Post 9/11; however, these types of facilities saw a significant increase in J. Dooley Headshotsecurity measures.
